[edit] Talker … busted
23 October 2008, by Former WRKO talker Reece Hopkins was arrested earlier today on a child rape rap: ["Ex-WRKO host facing child rape charge"].Last week, when it was announced that Hopkins was let go from WRKO in order to save money [one of eight cuts at Entercom's Boston operations], I wrote on Dan Kennedy's MediaNation that while I thought Reece was mildly entertaining the few times I listened to him, I've always wondered why they hired a conservative black New Yorker for that time slot in the first place. [edit] Gag Order On Howie?
12 October 2008, by Reader Bob wonders what's going on: Brian, On this past Thursday Howie Carr Show, Howie was gloating over entercom's stock going under $3.00, he was drinking champagne, and called the management vermon. Earlier in the week he said he would like to be bought out of his contract for 2.5 million. Then on Friday's show, not a word, he did not taunt WRKO management one bit. Do you think WRKO/julie/coffee boy put a gag order on him, or do you think Howie's attorney told him to knock it

Remember that contract he couldn't get out of, the one that compels him to work for a dying company? A few more days like this on Wall Street and his deal will tear itself up. Clearly, Citadel is a goner (today's low: 50 cents!), but I had thought Entercom mig
[edit] Last word on Manny (for a while)...
2 October 2008, by The Sports Guy (gasp!) gets it rightI don't often give Bill Simmons credit, but he is right on this issue. Scott Boras has a LOT to answer for. Or, Manny is bi-polar. Either explanation works. I particularly like the snarky comment about the Globe/NESN/WEEI/WRKO regurgitating the company line. Tee hee. I apologize for the lack of snark here, but as a married man, I have to start acting like a grown up. (kidding!)
[edit] Emails From Readers
2 October 2008, by A couple of reader emails worth sharing: Brian, Tuesday afternoon in the 5:00 PM hour, I heard the traffic reporters on RKO read as story about Russell Crowe's proposal that the US government should give every citizen $1 million instead of the proposed Wall Street bailout for $700 billion. This was reported as news. At first it sounded good to me, then I did math. $1 mil for 300 mil citizens equals $300 trillion. Crowe who was probably under the influence and thought it would cost $

26 September 2008, by As a host, want to know where you stand with station management? Promotional events often provide real clues. And in tonight's WRKO debate coverage, the suits have laid their cards right on the table. The station has scheduled a pre-debate show using none other than Todd Feinburg, apparently back as a fill-in, as its primary host. Where's The Felon? Or "Reese Hopkins"? They aren't participating, though Howie Carr will join Todd during the second pre-debate hour. Instead, "Hopk

[edit] Reese Hopkins Situation Deteriorates
17 September 2008, by If things weren't bad enough inside WRKO already, today, the situation deteriorated considerably. From a station in so much constant turmoil, it's hard to stand out, but Reese Hopkins has quickly become the elephant in the room. For some time, he'd been somewhat able to hide his personal demons from listeners, but that was shot to hell during a live, on-air teaser interview during The Felon's show this morning. Since the incident, I've been hearing from people who are frankly concerned w
[edit] Checking In With Radio Stocks
15 September 2008, by On a day when the Dow has been down more than 300 points due to the meltdown in the financial sector, I thought it would be interesting to take a quick look at how two of our local radio stocks are faring. First, WPRO owner Citadel's future is shakier than ever, with its stock price remaining well under a dollar per share. At the moment, CDL shares are trading at 85 cents, down .03. Few radio industry insiders expect the company to survive and the New York Stock Exchange has notified Citad
[edit] Entercom's Luxury Box Blues
11 September 2008, by Today's Boston Herald Media Biz column is a doozy, with Entercom and WRKO looking foolish on many fronts. First, Jessica Heslam reports that the beleaguered broadcast firm has asked sales execs not to bring clients to the company's Fenway luxury box this weekend so that elitist CEO David Field can entertain his friends and pretend all is well. Next, she has an update on the Reese Hopkins meltdown over any suggestion he might have misbehaved at the ballpark: Meanwhile, over at
