[edit] Obama sign defaced in county
14 September 2008, by Late Friday night, on Route 259 in Fulks Run, a large wooden political sign for Barack Obama was defaced with spray paint by anonymous vandals. The sign, which read “Welcome to Barack-ingham County,” was defaced with a giant X and the letters “KKK.” A nearby sign for Mark Warner was also vandalized, although notably not with “KKK.” The Obama sign has since been removed, and may will likely be repainted and reinstalled.

[edit] First Friday
6 September 2008, by First Friday is a city-wide public event that occurs on the first Friday of every month. The events may take on many purposes, including art gallery openings and social networking. American cities have promoted such events to bring people to historic areas perceived as dangerous, using the “safety in numbers” mentality to combat urban decay. - Wikipedia Last night was Harrisonburg’s First Friday for September and although small, was pretty awesome. I went downtown with my friend Laura Leischn
[edit] Country Club Court blocked in
4 September 2008, by Residents of Country Club Court, a townhouse subdivision with only one road in or out, are temporarily prohibited from leaving or coming home today. Norfolk Southern is repairing the railroad, and traffic in and out is completely blocked. I just spoke with a resident who is currently prevented from going to work. He said there was little warning to Country Club Court residents that they would become trapped. The road is expected to reopen around 2:00 pm. Some residents of that neighborhood a
[edit] Progress Raises Prices to $0.75
4 September 2008, by The Daily Progress has raised their newsstand prices by 50%, Hawes Spencer writes for The Hook. The paper was $0.50 for some years, but on Monday it went up to $0.75. The Richmond Times-Dispatch, which is likewise owned by Media General, also raised their price to the same level on Monday. The narrative of the Progress over the past few years has been continuous spending cuts, often in a form negatively impacting the quality and quantity of reporting. This time, at least they’ve found a way to
[edit] Fair warning, or voter suppression?
3 September 2008, by On August 15th, I started hearing reports that the Harrisonburg Registrar’s Office was indirectly discouraging new voters — particularly college students — from registering to vote in the city. The allegations were that the registrar was warning younger registrants that registering in their college town could possibly have a negative impact on their scholarships and tax status. Now I read in newrivervalley.com and Inside Higher Ed that this “warning” was being given to Virginia Tech students

[edit] Minyon Grass to the Base of Minyon Falls Bushwalk - 2 hours return
1 September 2008, by Armed with my iPhone / iTrail I charged down the track towards the plunge pool at the base of the falls. The last little part of the walk sees some clambering over the boulders so the guide books tend to class it as a medium to advanced walk. Walking through the thick shadowy rainforest was a real change for Anna and I. We are still used to the typically dry sclerophyll forests further inland. I was disappointed to see the iPhone hadn’t recorded a single waypoint at the bottom of the walk so
[edit] Digg local?
30 August 2008, by If you’re wondering why it’s been a little quiet here lately, I recently started a new job, I’m starting work on a new documentary, and I’ve been packing up to move across town. So, I probably won’t be able to devote as much time to hburgnews as I have in the past. But that might not matter so much if Harrisonburg had it’s own Digg. A big part of what I do as a news blogger is sort through news stories, and pass interesting local links along to readers. And that’s essentially what Digg does,
[edit] Wal-Mart marketing to locavores?
28 August 2008, by There was a story on a recent Morning Edition about Wal-Mart moving in on farmers market territory. The company is attempting to change their image by trying to appeal to environmentalists and locavores by selling local produce in their Supercenters. …the nation’s top grocery seller is highlighting its purchases of “locally grown” produce. While the company is touting the community benefits, buying local produce is also a way to cut the company’s growing fuel costs [...] Wal-Mart says partner
[edit] Obama ads on smutty 98Rock site
27 August 2008, by File this story under bizarre. ClickZ, an online marketing trend tracking site, reports Obama ads “showed up on an array of local Clear Channel rock radio station Web sites [including Harrisonburg's 98Rock] featuring content some would consider inappropriate for a radio station, much less a presidential campaign.” A screenshot of 98rockme.com features Obama’s ad alongside borderline — some might say downright — pornographic images (NSFW). ClickZ reports that the ads were placed by Centro, no
