[edit] Predictions for 2009
2 January 2009, by 2008 is over, and it's been quite a year. There are plenty of metaphors to go around. Some refer to the Black Swans (which couldn't possibly exist). Another author writes about the tipping point. I like to think of the present as our collective Wile E. Coyote moment. The usual method of predicting the ...

[edit] GNU Screen: an introduction and beginner's tutorial || kuro5hin.org
30 December 2008, by _travis_ Most modern Unix-based operating systems (e.g. Linux, MacOS X, and BSD) come with a little console-mode utility called GNU Screen. It's a powerful tool in the hands of the console warrior, a veritable Swiss Army knife of text-mode human-computer interaction.
This utility, despite its considerable usefulness, goes unused by a great many people. Why is this? Few people even know it's there, and those that do rarely understand the problem it solves. In this article, I will explain what screen does for you, and provide a simple set of instructions for accomplishing basic tasks using screen. My audience is those that are skilled with the command line but who have little or no experience with screen itself.
[edit] Quickies
30 December 2008, by Some quickies. Kuro5hin has a story, Through an Iraqi's Eyes. Careful of the k5 troll crowd though, that and the story doesn't amount to anything much more than "I am happy", but still interesting nevertheless... (continued on page)

[edit] kuro5hin-- The Credit Crisis and the Bailout in Plain English

[edit] Demonology '08 || kuro5hin.org
28 November 2008, by saltation gotta LOVE the inversion of OpenBSD's name's implication, plus their delightfully loony uberzealot main man: In one highly publicized incident, a user who had questioned de Raadt's delay of porting CML2 was banned by de Raadt from the OpenBSD Foundation's mailing list. Later, he cracked the user's box and remapped their keyboard to prove that they hadn't configured their system properly, thus rendering their argument about CML2 support moot. Though rebuked by fellow developers and industry pundits, de Raadt never apologized and to this day has refused to include CML2.
