[edit] Growing Up

11 October 2008, by And there wasn’t a beanball in sight, if you don’t count Grant Balfour’s kiss on J.D. Drew’s right shoulder in the top of the eighth. As a matter of fact, there wasn’t much of anything wild in sight to open the American League Championship Series Friday night, if you didn’t count the frequency with which Daisuke Matsuzaka got himself into and out of more traffic jams than a Las Vegas taxi driver and the Tampa Bay Rays got themselves into and out of a couple of rally-ready innings with nothing

[edit] Judgment Calls: Handicapping the ALCS

10 October 2008, by We're up against the gun here at WMYM, so we're going to make things easy: Here's my ALCS series breakdown in terms of pitching, hitting and, finally, a flat out prediction. Here's hoping it's more accurate than Andy's stab at the ALDS. Big Papi and Jason Bay hope there's more to hug about in the games to come. PITCHING: Boston: Matsuzaka-Beckett-Lester-Wakefield-Matsuzaka-Beckett-Lester Tampa Bay: Shields-Kazmir-Garza-Sonnanstine-Sheilds-Kazmir-Garza It's hard to make a convincing argument

[edit] Beating the Rays, Or The Evolution of Moneyball

10 October 2008, by I won't go into series analysis today; the previews across the web have done a fine job giving effective coverage to all angles. Personally, I recommend Paul SF's excellent dissection over at YFSF and Evan Brunell's exploration of key series factors at Fire Brand of the American League, but suffice it to say that all commentary points to another tight ALCS with a good potential for Red Sox

10 October 2008, by - Thank Elway for the new South Park episode completely validating everyone here at Frost Brewed Baseball's opinions of the new Indiana Jones movie. Though we didn't take our criticisms as far as Trey Parker and Matt Stone did, we agree wholeheartedly nonetheless. - To everyone who thinks that Ryan Howard should be the NL MVP because he led the NL in HRs and RBIs (but hit .250)......don't watch baseball anymore because you obviously have no idea how the game works or what it takes to be the bes

[edit] Being Wrong Never Felt So Right

8 October 2008, by So as Cameron has all too joyfully pointed out, that pre-series prediction was a big swing and a miss. Then again, despite what John Lackey and Torii Hunter want you to believe, this was not an upset, and quite frankly I feel ridiculous making that prediction. Consider the following: 1. The Red Sox were 1st in the majors in OBP. The Angels were 18th. 2. The Red Sox were 3rd in the majors in slugging percentage. Again, the Angels were 18th. 3. The Red Sox were 1st in the American Leagu

[edit] Jonathan Papelbon Sprays Craig Sager

8 October 2008, by Craig Sager has never been known for being a conservative dresser. In fact, if there is a bad color combination or a shiny suit in existence, chances are that it’s in Sager’s closet. After the Boston Red Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels in Game 4 to advance to the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, closer Jonathan Papelbon interrupted a post game interview Sager was having with reliever Justin Masterson. Papelbon’s weapon of choice was a bottle of champagne, wh

[edit] Two coin flips away

8 October 2008, by Two coin flips away Last night's Angels-Red Sox match-up is a prime example why I still follow this game. After Jon Lester shut down the Angels for seven innings - 14 goose eggs for the ace in the series - Justin Masterson allowed the Angels to tie it up with two runs in the 8th. Before 2004, I might have turned off the TV if that happened. Now, it's just a matter of how they're going to pull it out. They survived a scare in the top of the 9th, when the Angels had a man on third with one o

[edit] Celebrating the Eulogy of a Talented Team

7 October 2008, by Monday night's ALDS-clinching victory over the Angels was a particularly sweet one, even if it did come with a full Immodium bottle's worth of discomfort for our friends over at The Halo is Lit, as you can read about in exquisitely painful detail here. Still, it was a sweet one for the Red Sox because it affirmed that they would win by sticking to their program, running out their young guns in key situations and winning and losing with them. Of course, had things turned out differently with th
