[edit] Delta Air Lines and Its Singular Focus on Executing Its Singular Vision
20 November 2008, by This blog has pointed to the upcoming labor negotiations in the US airline industry many times. Labor issues at many US airlines are emerging that underscore this blogger’s call that these upcoming negotiations will be the most important since the airline industry was deregulated in 1978. And we are not really talking about economics yet. In the past couple of weeks: 1. jetBlue pilots file for union representation 2. Southwest pilots upset at company’s plan to code share 3. Southwest’s employee

11 November 2008, by A little over 3 1/2 years ago two large airlines, US Airways and America West, merged to create the new US Airways. Since then planes have been repainted, counters rebranded, and operations merged on the surface. However, once you start looking further the story changes. Earlier this year a disgruntled US Airways "East" (original US Air) pilot group voted for and got new representation under the US Air Pilots Association, freeing itself from the Airline Pilot's Association (ALPA). This move wa

Delta announced Thursday it plans to offer flights from Paris, the major hub of alliance partner Air France, to secondary U.S. cities Pittsburgh and Raleigh-Durham, N.C. Our $5 billion net income forecast assumes $80 oil, 8-9% RASM [revenue per available seat mile] growth, and domestic capacity down 8-9%. In fact, the airline industry is poised to report a small net profit in 4Q08. Under that scenario, Mr

[edit] How will the Delta-Northwest merger work out?
30 October 2008, by I don't usually put up these kind of questions, but I was wondering if anybody had an opinion about how the Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines merger will work out. Airline mergers don't usually fare too well. There are always reasons why they didn't work out, but the bottom line is that they usually don't work out. The hope of the merging partners is that 1 + 1 = 3. In reality, 1 + 1 = 2 would be a pretty good outcome. Many mergers wind up as 1 + 1 = 1. American Airlines is smaller now

30 October 2008, by So Delta Airlines and Northwest airlines have gone and gotten hitched. As one who flies out of a smaller airport, I’m sure it means fewer choices for me. It also means that one fair airline (Delta) and one kind of crappy airline (Northwest) will likely slide further down in terms of customer service. To be honest, I’m concerned that American will now see the need to merge with another airline and hurt its service (in the interest of full disclosure I’ve got Gold status on American and belong
