[edit] As bad as all that?

14 July 2008, by There is a long list of types and styles of leadership enthusiastically promoted by their various proponents. These cover a lot of ground, from the fantastic (edge-walking leaders) to the mystical (shaman leaders) to the comical (inspired to leadership by toys). Their number increases, it seems, daily. One recent addition is partially spiritual - ???wellness leaders??? -?? and another almost refreshingly prosaic ??? growth leaders. The problem with them all is the word ???leader.??? Or, at lea

[edit] David Mamet Gets All David Mamet On You

6 May 2008, by A few weeks back playwright/screenwriter/all-around genius David Mamet wrote an essay in the Village Voice entitled; “Why I Am No Longer A Brain-Dead Liberal”, and true-to-form, the piece is inspired, cynical, hilarious, basically everything you’d expect from one of America’s greatest living writers: “As a child of the ’60s, I accepted as an article of faith that government is corrupt, that business is exploitative, and that people are generally good at heart. These cherished precepts had,

[edit] Tribeca Film Festival Review: "Redbelt"

27 April 2008, by In his recent, attention-getting Village Voice article proclaiming himself to no longer be a "brain-dead liberal", David Mamet chided those who fail to appreciate how great it is here in the land of the free and who sit around trying to think up reasons to be dissatisfied with democratic capitalism, just so they can have something to be sore about. In Redbelt, Smiley Mamet's latest stab at writing and directing a movie, the hero, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, is a hard-working, incorruptable blac

[edit] Progressives scramble to reboot brains, refute “Republican does nice thing” article

9 April 2008, by The most-read article on Slate.com today is a reprint of a touching story about John McCain from 1997. Iin 1982, Mo Udall – an established, liberal, Arizona congressman – went out of his way to forge a genuine friendship with the newly-elected McCain. McCain repaid him by going to visit Udall regularly as he lay unconscious for months on his deathbed. The crux of the article – McCain as loving, devoted friend – is apparently too much nuance to comprehend for some commenters. He is an evil, bl

[edit] David Mamet, Or: How I Learned to Stop Pretending and Love Rush Limbaugh

8 April 2008, by In a way, I am a student of David Mamet. When I returned to New York last year and began dusting off the cobwebs of my theatrical career, my best instincts told me to get back into training before I started looking for work. It had been years - decades, in fact - since I had been to an acting class, and the training I had was mostly squishy and vague. So I was determined to send myself to boot camp - to find a training program that would help me become a more disciplined, more intentional, mo

[edit] David Mamet makes a change

27 March 2008, by David Mamet makes a change March 27th, 2008 Self-labeled life long liberal (I think he writes plays, too) David Mamet has had a change of heart. It seems conservatism is his new home: I found not only that I didn’t trust the current government (that, to me, was no surprise), but that an impartial review revealed that the faults of this president—whom I, a good liberal, considered a monster—were little different from those of a president whom I re

[edit] David Mamet: A Conservative? Kinda sorta ...

27 March 2008, by I've seen two articles about this in the papers and had to read it. David Mamet in the Village Voice Mamet writes a lengthy discourse on politics. Sort of a "how I figured out I'm not really a liberal but a conservative in stead." Well, that's how some are interpreting it. I'm not sure he's really a conservative just yet, but it was a great read. I hope Mamet keeps writing on politics. He'd make a great columnist.

[edit] Hollywood Filmmaker Gives Up Kool-Aid

22 March 2008, by Hollywood Filmmaker Gives Up Kool-Aid One of thousands of liberal slogans is that a liberal is only a conservative who has been arrested. (There's an answering slogan that a conservative is only a liberal who has been mugged, but I digress). Like most liberal slogans, its lack of thought doesn't keep us from grasping the basic myth: in this case, the myth of liberals who are created by some transformative trauma, usually some disappointment, conflict, betrayal, or injustice suffered at the

[edit] Intellectual Honesty Means (Sometimes) Changing Your Mind

18 March 2008, by Much too long away. Apologies to faithful readers. And a wink and a hearty “you’re welcome” to those on whom my opinions sometimes grate. Work and life (all good) have impinged on recreational writing time — not to mention basic things like exercise and sleep. Not that I’m complaining… This one, however, is too good to pass up — rising to near watershed status in several respects. As many of you will no doubt already be aware a full week after its initial publication, playwright David Mamet h

[edit] David Mamet

We were riding along an

[edit] David Mamet Abandons "Brain-Dead Liberalism"

13 March 2008, by Author: Michael Weiss Posted to Jewcy: March 13, 2008 9:58 am ===== An English professor is walking along Broadway in the Village when he's approached by a homeless man asking for change. The professor instead imparts classical words of wisdom: "Neither a borrower nor a lender be." And as if to underscore the pedantry, he adds, "William Shakespeare." The homeless man wears a sour expression on his face and after pausing a moment replies: "Fuck you. David Mamet." Who really didn't see this co

[edit] Mr. Mamet in the Study With the Revolver

13 March 2008, by Mr. Mamet in the Study With the Revolver By Jennifer Schuessler David Mamet (Michel Euler/Associated Press) Forget all the election year rhetoric about hope, change, and the will of the people. David Mamet, in an essay in this week’s Village Voice explaining why he’s no longer “a brain-dead liberal,” offers a new definition of direct democracy: “In the abstract, we may envision an Olympian perfection of perfect beings in Washington doing the business of their employers, the people, but any
