3 December 2008, by unknown Clay Shirky in Boing Boing:. In the same way the internet has forced newspapers into a ‘news vs. paper’ moment, the publishing world is in a ‘readers vs. book lovers’ moment. In this environment, the single most important choice anyone ...
[edit] Institutions as Barriers, Organizations as Enablers
3 December 2008, by Many out there in the edublogosphere understand the power of the network. Due to that understanding, many have established their own Personal Learning Networks (PLNs). As more people have done this and experienced their power, it has led to the logical desire to form Educational Learning Networks (ELNs), where groups with similar learning goals, get together irrespective of institutional affiliation, geographic location, or temporal constraints. For those working in traditional schools (most te
[edit] Lessons for Social Software
3 December 2008, by I’ve admired Clay Shirky’s work since first meeting him a couple years ago at a Personal Democracy Forum. Somehow though, I had missed his excellent 2003 piece “A Group is Its Own Worst Enemy.” So thanks to Rich Gordon for pointing to it this week. Clay’s speech lays out commonalities across social software, pulling lessons from the past few decades… and pre-Web 2.0 explosion. It reads, to me, like a text book version of the lessons we’ve learned “the hard way” in hosting Front Porch Forum.
[edit] Gen Y Parents & User Generated Content
3 December 2008, by Here is a little theory I’m working on… Have you read the ‘The Tipping Point’ by Malcolm Gladwell? Great book. There is a part in the book where he discusses how “trend setters” establish patterns for the rest of the world to emulate. I believe two of the inadvertent trend setters for user generated content are: Gen Y newly married couples and Gen Y parents. Over the past year, I began noticing some trends in my circle of friends (mostly aged 24-34). We are at a stage of our lives where peop

[edit] privacy is hard
2 December 2008, by I got this dialog on Facebook today and I was completely stumped. Totally. I read the paragraph over and over, trying to figure out what I meant. I read it to friends, didn’t help. Thought about it some more. It turns out that what I really wanted to do was both of these things. I want it out of my profile and I want it not to be able to read my data, either. But you can’t. It’s a false dichotomy. You can pick one or the other, but not both. In the end I picked “Remove” - removing a
[edit] mumbai and the coming-of-age of citizen journalism
2 December 2008, by It’s been a hectic few days. With the news about the horrible terrorist attacks in Mumbai and the unrest in Bangkok, there is plenty of (bad) news to be concerned about and pay attention to. The role of new technologies and citizen media have been particularly interesting to me, of course, and as such, I sometimes feel a bit like a vulture. Bad news, these days, seems to be good news for my dissertation and research. Nevertheless, it becomes crucial to understand what role citizen media play in
[edit] Agencies and Change: Shifts and Whatnot
1 December 2008, by Piggybacking Sean’s comments on Charles’ article about what the future of the advertising agency holds, in which Charles essentially asserts is the combination of transmedia planning and the black swan theory, combined with a shitload of experimentation and the acceptance of failure. (But first, a quick aside on failure. It seems like there are two ideas of what failure should be. First, there’s the shotgun approach with the hope that one actually hits the target and becomes the next big vir
[edit] Twitter top 10: who should I follow if I’m interested in the music industry?
30 November 2008, by I’ve long been a fan of Twitter, but recently have begun to use it in a semi-serious way professionally to follow what goes on in the music and media industry (rather than simply tweeting what I’m having for lunch!). Since doing this, I’ve been meaning to write a brief post on my tumblelog about some interesting music-types to follow on Twitter. Earlier today, however, TwiTip, the blog that sets out to provide “Twitter tips in 140 characters or more”, set a challenge to construct your own ‘T

[edit] Control scales, but the nature of control changes
28 November 2008, by David Weinberger writes that with a few exceptions, control doesn’t scale and social media makes social control even harder – a point Clay Shirky also makes, although he highlights that its as much about the medium as it is the message. In my mind the development and relationship of information and communication technology (ICT) to control is also a story about the span and speed of that control. Without ICT we would be stuck managing at the speed of the fastest horse, boat or semaphore message

[edit] The Institution Versus the Web
26 November 2008, by I’ve been a big fan of Clay Shirky since I watched his video on the participatory potential of the Web. I’ve also become a huge fan of TED.com and have been watching entirely too many videos up there as well (including the Johnny Lee talk). But here’s another, earlier talk given by Shirky back in July 2005. I think he had some prescient things to say about how the Web has evolved over the past couple of years, as well as some of the threats the Web poses to institutions. Share This

[edit] Are You Organized For Failure?
26 November 2008, by Clay Shirky’s book, Here Comes Everybody - The Power Of Organizing Without Organizations is essential reading for everyone seeking to understand how our world has been redefined by the web. I threw sticky notes in a few pages and wanted to highlight a quote that warrants more discussion. This is from page 246, where the open source movement is being discussed: In traditional organizations, trying anything is expensive, even if just in staff time to discuss the idea, so someone must make some

[edit] Book (I haven’t read yet) review
22 November 2008, by Nowadays with all the source of informations we have at our disposal, we need to manage the information we are receiving but also the information we are diffusing about ourselves (see this video from Clay Shirky). That leads us to personnal branding. I found this very interesting post about a book I haven’t read : Career Renegade: How To Make A Great Living Doing What You Love by Jonathan Fields. [edit] A cultura do “estou te seguindo”…
21 November 2008, by No encontro sobre Web 2.0 em NY, em setembro, a melhor palestra que assisti foi do Clay Shirky, com o sugestivo nome “It’s Not Information Overload. It’s Filter Failure“ Ou seja, na verdade com a avalanche de informação o nosso problema não é exatamente reclamar da onda, mas arranjar formas de resolvê-la. Já escrevi sobre a questão da ansiedade da informação ao responder uma pergunta durante a Palestra da Trasnpetro sobre como nos defender dessa avalanche e, a partir dali, comecei a amadur

17 November 2008, by The Power of the Network - now in it's second, 100-page extended, edition is slowly but surely forming into just the kind of social object I hoped it would become: an interesting thing people can talk about together - their conversations creating new ideas, action and value. The new version's chapters are as follows: 1. The Death of Death 2. Don't Just Witness the Network (adapting to survive) 3. How to Go Viral 4. Communities of Purpose 5. Jane MacGonigal is the Director of Game Research and Development of the Institute of the Future and author of the game Superdestruct. [edit] Bloggers As Tribal Leaders
15 November 2008, by It’s a rainy, windy Saturday afternoon here in the District of Columbia, and in between bouts of surprisingly successful housecleaning, I found myself thinking about the recent revelation I had–that I was the leader of a particular tribe, and my blog was the meeting place, the community space where we gathered. The town hall, as it were–the rock around which I spoke, others argued, ideas were shared, and we all evolved as a result. What made me realize this was a post from Seth Godin on how
