19 October 2008, by kouxiansheng BEIJING, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) -- Beijing's former vice mayor Liu Zhihua was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve for taking bribes, local media reported Sunday, citing a Saturday court ruling.

   Liu, 59, was charged with taking bribes of about 6.97 million yuan (1.02 million U.S. dollars) when he was vice mayor of Beijing and director of the management committee of Zhongguancun Science Park from 1999 to 2006, according to Hengshui Intermediate People's Court in neighboring Hebei Province.

   The court said the bribes were pocketed by Liu and his mistress Wang Jianrui. Liu abused his power to get contract projects, loans and offer promotions for others in exchange for profits.

   The Intermediate People’s Court in Hengshui, a city outside Beijing, ordered the death sentence Saturday after finding Liu Zhihua guilty of taking bribes, said a court clerk who would only give his surname, Ma.

  However, the sentence was “suspended” for two years, Ma said. The reprieve means if Liu shows good behavior his sentence will be commuted to life imprisonment.

28 July 2008, by BEIJING - China said that half of the population of Beijing will be executed this week in a move to reduce air pollution in advance of the Olympics, which start August 8.  The executions are expected to reduce by half the 3.3 million cars belching noxious gases on Beijing’s roads.  Beijing’s air quality is some 40 times worse than the air quality in Los Angeles.  The identities of those to be executed will be determined in a lottery to be conducted Tuesday.  The executions will occur Friday.
