5 September 2008, by 05 September 1918 - On this day ninety years ago, the Boston Red Sox and Chicago Cubs opened the 1918 World Series, with Babe Ruth and the Red Sox winning Game One of the scheduled seven-game championship series 1-0 over the Cubs at Comiskey Park. The 1918 Fall Classic was played far earlier than any other series in major league post-season history; due to the ongoing World War, baseball had agreed shortened its season. It was also decided that, due to travel restrictions that had been placed d

The Pawtucket Red Sox, Portland Sea Dogs, Lancaster JetHawks and Lowell Spinners have all clinched playoff berths. [edit] Dustin Pedroia may not be aiming for MVP, but he may only be a few long balls away!
4 September 2008, by Some people would say that the fact sheet on Dustin Pedroia is wrong – it lists him as 5’9”, but many think he’s really around 5’6”. Regardless, Little Dusty has been putting on quite a show as of late with the Red Sox. Last year’s Al Rookie of the Year, many thought Pedroia would fall into the sophomore slump that hampers so many major leaguers, but nothing could be further from the truth. Pedroia, the scrappy little second baseman from Arizona State is currently leading the AL is batting a
[edit] Won’t Dustin Pedroia Be the Cutest Li’l MVP Ever?
4 September 2008, by 2008 has been a crazy year in Major League Baseball. The Rays are in first place in September, Manny Ramirez is wearing Dodger Blue, and the Yankees are basically out of the playoff chase. But perhaps nothing sums up just how weird this season has been more than this: DENVER POST baseball writer Troy Renck wrote in a column today that he is going to be voting for Dustin Pedroia for AL MVP. The weirdest part: he might be right. Renck laid out some compelling reasons to select Pedroia: He’s le
[edit] Take A Deep Breath...And Let It Out
4 September 2008, by I have some staggering stats for you following last night's down-to-the-wire game. 455. Fenway has sold out 455 consecutive times. Tying the Indians record for most consecutive sell-outs. When they return home after the brief trip to Texas, they will break the record. .621: That's Dustin Pedroia's batting average over the past 7 days. 3.79: that's the ERA for the starting pitchers. Not bad when your team has average 5.3 runs a game. Look for the ERA to get lower as we roll into Septe

[edit] MLB Gears Up for the Hunt for a Red October
4 September 2008, by With the 2008 regular season heading into the last month, what are the chances of back-to-back World Series for the Boston Red Sox? First, they still need to make the playoffs. Unlike the Angels and the Cubs, the Sox can't afford to lose concentration, with Minnesota and the White Sox in good positions to make a bid for the wild card. But neither side looks like they want to get to October, let alone overhaul the Red Sox. So, Boston's priority must be to win the AL East and avoid the Angels i

[edit] The Red Sox Starting Nine (Questions) for September
4 September 2008, by 1. How will Josh Beckett return from the DL? This is clearly the most pressing issue facing Boston right now. Beckett was and still is the ace of the pitching staff, despite the fact that he certainly has not pitched up to his standards in 2008. Perhaps it was all the BBQ and beer he consumed in the offseason, but Beckett hasn’t been right all year. And 11-9 with a 4.35 ERA is awful unless you’re one of the Paul Byrds of the world. But the bottom line is Beckett will be the key to another Wo

[edit] Varitek’s Future
4 September 2008, by Jason Varitek’s numbers are down this year, but he has never really been a significant offensive producer during his career in Boston. He had the potential to be a great hitter from both sides of the plate, but never really put it all together. He is an excellent defensive catcher but he is pretty one dimensional at this point in his career.Because of this, I don’t think it’s vital to re-sign Varitek during the off-season. The problem is losing a catcher sets back the pitching staff about

4 September 2008, by Got an email this morning asking me if I would be willing to let someone republish one of my poems: Hi Constantine, This past baseball season, I’ve been running a Cubs literary series at a Mexican restaurant down the street from Wrigley Field. It’s called, “Lovable Losers Literary Revue.” (www.lovablelosersliteraryrevue.com). I’m now putting together an anthology that arises out of the reading series. We’ve had a lot of great guests–Sun-Times columnist Dave Hoekstra, American Skin author Don
