[edit] Blogging From a Bus

23 July 2008, by The bus is the work horse of our nation’s “people moving” fleet.  Not as reliable as  a train, not as sexy as a plane, and not as convenient and private as our personal cars, the bus moves folks either short or long distances within a reasonable time frame, at a reasonable cost, and on an infrastructure that already exists, roads.  Despite how noble the bus may be the truth is most of us equate a long bus ride with the type of hell reserved for child murders and ethnic cleansers.  We cringe at

[edit] BoltBus is the Prep-Tech Way to Travel

10 July 2008, by BoltBus is the Prep-Tech Way to Travel The holiday weekend taught me a few new things about how to get out of the city on the cheap. I was headed home to Boston and decided on BoltBus (rather than the always dubious Chinatown bus choices). BoltBus steals the “$1/seat*” concept of the Midwestern Megabus venture, but throws in the added flash factor of onboard Wi-Fi, power outlets, ample legroom and flatscreen TVs that don’t turn on. “Bolt for a Buck,” however catchy, is not entirely true, a

[edit] Traveling Troubles

7 July 2008, by I didn’t intend to spent my last moments in both New York City and Wilmington in tears, standing before some sort of transportation device. In fact, I intended to leave happy and refreshed. That was the whole point of getting away. The Universe, again, had different plans for me, and you know how well those plans usually play out.  Let’s start with New York. When I last left you, I was on my way to the Big Apple, happily typing away thanks to the free Wi-Fi on Bolt Bus. Sadly, that bused turn

[edit] Competition for the ever-popular Chinatown bus?

Who knew you could get to New York from Philly or 3 bucks?  And all this time I’ve been forking over 50 bucks for gas, 10 for NJ Turnpike tolls and another 6 for the Lincoln Tunnel.  What a sucker. Anyway, you should give Alex’s feature-length (about 5 minutes) piece a listen. And get on the bus, gus…

[edit] Boston to New York and Back Again for Cheap

7 July 2008, by I know — some people avoid traveling long distances by bus as if the vehicles were carriers of the bubonic plague. Yet, there’s really no reason to fear or loathe the mode of transportation, especially now that it’s gotten cheaper than ever. Just about everyone who travels in the East has probably heard about the ridiculously low $1 fares some companies, such as Bolt Bus and Mega Bus here in Boston, charge for a one-way trip to a major destination, most often New York City. Compared to what th

[edit] That Time I Wanted to Kill Myself, but Killed Bugs Instead

27 June 2008, by This week was, by all accounts, pretty terrible. All I had to do was get through this week to get to the oasis that would be New York City with my sister, Jillian, and Lindsey. I wanted nothing big. Nothing stressful. Just the end of my class and some packing. The universe, apparently, wanted something else. After being in a finicky, annoying mood on Tuesday for a number of reasons (living in filth, lots of reading, lack of quality television), I woke up Wednesday wanting to just be positive.

12 June 2008, by This has nothing to do with new web 2.0 technologies but rather a much older technology. Not only is it reliable, comfortable and cheap, they offer free wifi on the bus!

As reported in an earlier blog posting on Fung Wah’s competitors, it can’t be denied that discount buses have come to Boston and are here to stay! The big players are the Fung Wah, the BoltBus and the Megabus with one way trips to New York from Boston costing $15 or less each way. On the last quick trip to New York I tested out the BoltBus to see what all the hype was about, and props to my mom who went along f

20 May 2008, by I was very dissapointed earlier in the month when it seemed that the bus that I generally take home (30th street philly to 30th street NY) was no more. However, it has merely been replaced by the most awesome mode of transport ever to travel the earth. The Bolt bus. There are outlets in the back of the seats, strong wireless connection (even while moving), and fares starting at 1 dollar. Yes, 1. Uno. They didnt pay me to write this. They dont have to. [edit] Bolt for a Buck

12 April 2008, by I’m on my way to New York City (THE City, as it turns out), and I decided to be a little unconventional this time and take a new busline, called BoltBus. I saw the advertisement, well, on the side of one of their buses on the highway with their slogan “Bolt for a Buck.” Doing anything for cheap - especially 1 dollar! - is an irresistible temptation for me, so for my weekend trip to the City, I decided to go ahead and book myself a round trip ticket. Sure enough, I paid $2 (plus a $0.50 ‘trans

[edit] New Low Cost Alternative To Flying - Kind Of

28 March 2008, by It’s been a while since I’ve road a bus somewhere. From what I recall, the experience wasn’t that great. The tickets were a bit pricey and I arrived at my destination about 30 minutes late. If I have to go anywhere more than 5 hours away these days, I typically fly. This may soon change. A new bus service has just started offering low cost travel between a few major cities on the east coast. Boltbus, a division of Greyhound, is now selling low-cost tickets in an interesting auction-like form

[edit] Daily Transit Links Roundup

28 March 2008, by Bus travel making a comeback? Megabus faces new competition with Bolt Bus (on the East Coast). CalPIRG students take an extended spring break with a bike tour from San Francisco to LA to promote high speed rail. By removing landscaping (who needs it), Dodger Stadium adds 1,000 more parking spaces, but fans are still aprehensive about traffic. Livable Places is hosting a Community Workshop to make the Chinatown Gold Line station more pedestrain/bicyclist friendly.
