[edit] Two Cheers for Obama

29 August 2008, by By John Kaufman Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention Bowl last night in Denver was impressive and stirring. Unlike his recent major speech in Berlin, Germany, this speech was bold and specific, packing more of a populist punch than we’ve come to expect from him. He even mentioned saving farms, briefly, and let’s hope by “farms” he meant the real, small kind. He spoke of a more responsible and responsive government, but he also spoke of personal responsibilit

28 August 2008, by Scientists, it seems, have discovered that most cows align themselves in pastures based upon the earth’s magnetic field, with their heads to the north and tails to the south. This amazing discovery was made primarily through the use of satellite imagery. Farmers have no doubt noted this fact since the beginning of animal domestication, but it never occurred to any of them that cows were magnetic. Or perhaps it just never occurred to any farmer to much care in what direction his or her cows fac

27 August 2008, by On Monday NOAA settled on a speed limit for large vessels to prevent the deaths of right whales along the Atlantic coast: 10 knots, or about 11 miles per hour. (Whales are big, of course, but relatively slow and biologically limited.) Whenever a journalist or a “futurist” utters the phrase “cutting-edge” this or that, I think of a scythe. 26 August 2008, by It’s been a full, busy, tough week.  While we have had many victories we can rejoice in, this past Saturday we experienced a big loss here on our farm.  We lost our milk cow, Bonnie.  A combination of her curiosity and determination, a left open barn door and a feed bag, ultimately caused her death.  While, in retrospect, we could kick ourselves for not having the feed more tightly secured and the barn door shut tight, we did learn a lot on Saturday.  Paul and the boys spent a large part of th
